How to Calculate Shares of SCHD Needed for $100 a Month in Dividends

I’m Tyler, a former financial advisor and portfolio manager. Now I create financial content for free so you don’t have to pay for it.

1. Determine Annual Income Needs

Start by multiplying $100 by 12 to get your desired annual income. That’s $1,200.

2. Know SCHD's Dividend Yield

Understand that SCHD, a blue-chip dividend fund, currently pays about 3.7% in dividends.

3. Calculate Required Investment

Now, use the formula: $1,200 ÷ 0.037. You’d need approximately $32,432 to earn $100 a month from SCHD.

4. Determine the Share Price

As of now, SCHD is trading around $27.92.

5. Calculate Number of Shares Needed

Finally, $32,432 ÷ $27.92 means you’d need about 1,161 shares of SCHD to produce $100 a month in dividends.

Conclusion

So can you live on dividends alone? Sure, but to do so, you’d already need to be pretty wealthy. If any of this is helpful, sign up for my free weekly newsletter by clicking the link in my bio, and each week, I’ll send you over another money playbook that actually works.
